ICTR Chief Prosecutor to visit CCDH
The Honourable Hassan Bubacar Jallow, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) paid a visit to the Advisory Council on Human Rights (CCDH) on May 5, 2008. This visit falls within the scope of a mission to raise the awareness of the UN member states about the progress and challenges of international criminal justice.Mr Hassan Bubacar Jallow and his legal advisor at the ICTR, Professor Mohamed Ayat, will respectively deliver presentations on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the traditional Gacaca courts.
Born in 1950, Mr Hassan Bubacar Jallow is graduate from the University College London. He was Gambia’s Attorney General and served as a judge of the Gambia’s Supreme Court. Mr Jallow has the rank of Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, and was appointed to the office of ICTR Prosecutor in September 2003 for a term of four years, and is currently serving his second term.
Mr Ayat held a PHD in law from the Faculty of Law of Toulouse. He was former judge and lawyer at the Rabat Bar, and since 1997 he has been senior legal adviser in the office of the ICTR Prosecutor.
It is worth mentioning that the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda was established by virtue of Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter and resolution 955 (1994) of November 8, 1994 of the Security Council to prosecute persons responsible for acts of genocide and other grave violations of international humanitarian law committed on the territory of Rwanda and to prosecute Rwandan citizens responsible for such acts or violations of international law committed on the territory of neighbouring states between January 1 and December 31, 1994.
