CNDH elected as a member of the NANHRI and chosen to host the international triennial conference of the GANHRI
The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) was chosen to host the international triennial conference of the Global Alliance of the National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) in 2018. This event is organized by the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) of a country chosen by rotation among the regional groups (Africa, America, Asia-Pacific and Europe) in consultation with the President of the GANHRI and under the auspices of the United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights.
This decision was taken within the framework of the General Assembly of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) held on November 7th 2017 in Kigali, Rwanda.
At the end of this General Assembly, NANHRI members re-elected the CNDH as a member of the NANHRI steering Committee alongside with Rwanda (President), Egypt (Vice-President), Uganda, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Burundi, Kenya and Cameroon.
Furthermore, the CNDH has been officially elected a member of the Subcommittee on Accreditation (SCA) of the GANHRI. The Council joined the SCA as representative of Africa, the strategic body of the international network of NHRIs for a three year term.
To be noted, the SCA’s mission is to review the conformity of NHRIs accreditation or reaccreditation applications with the Paris Principles, and to make recommendations to the GANHRI Bureau. This later is responsible for the final decision-making on accreditations. It is also competent to prepare general comments to clarify the meaning and implementation of the Paris Principles governing NHRIs.
The CNDH has also been elected a member of the NANHRI Business and Human Rights Working Group and the NANHRI Migration Working Group. Besides, it has been chairing the GANHRI Business and Human Rights Working Group since August 2015 and has been part of the GANHRI’s Working Group on Migration.
In addition, the President of the CNDH was honoured to represent the NANHRI during the tribute ceremony to the victims of the Rwandan genocide, which took place at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Created in October 2007 in Rwanda, the NANHRI is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The Consultative Council for Human Rights (CCDH), currently CNDH, chaired the NANHRI from November 2009 to November 2011.
