CNDH SECRETARY GENERAL MEETS ANGELA MERKEL’S PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR AFRICA IN MBZ
Secretary General of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Mr. Mohamed Essabbar, met with German Chancellor’s G8 Personal Representative for Africa in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (MBZ), Mr. Günter Nooke, on 14 November 2012, at the headquarters of the Council in Rabat.Secretary General of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Mr. Mohamed Essabbar, met with German Chancellor’s G8 Personal Representative for Africa in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (MBZ), Mr. Günter Nooke, on 14 November 2012, at the headquarters of the Council in Rabat.
Mr. Essabbar and Mr. Nooke discussed many issues related to the situation of Human Rights in Morocco, especially after the adoption of the new constitution, which Mr. Essabbar considered as a national human rights instrument, and the recent ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women and the First Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Mr. Essabbar highlighted the Council’s new mandate, history, structure, areas of interest, functioning mechanisms, reports, etc., in addition to the Moroccan experience in the field of transitional justice, through the work of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission.
Mr. Essabbar and Mr. Nooke exchanged on other related topics, mainly the situation of refugees and illegal Sub-Saharan immigrants in Morocco, the Rome Statute, the independence of the judiciary, guarantees of fair trial and the promotion of the human rights culture.
CNDH Secretary General had a similar meeting on Thursday, November 9, 2012 with an Australian parliamentary delegation, chaired by Senator Gavin Marshall. The delegation was briefed about the council’s mandate in the protection and promotion of human rights and its prerogatives to visit the different places of detention, to draw up reports with recommendations to the competent authorities, etc.
