CNDH takes part in interactive dialogue on human right to safe drinking water and sanitation (27th UNHRC)

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) took part at the interactive dialogue, held on 9 Sept. 2014 by the 27th UN Human Rights Council with Catarina de Albuquerque, Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation. It was represented in this dialogue by Ms Houria Tazi Sadeq, member of the Regional Human Rights Commission of Casablanca and expert on the right to water.

Ms Tazi Sadeq commended in her statement the law on water (Article 31) and Morocco's commitments in this area, particularly as it adhered to the Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses, which entered into force last August. She highlighted CNDH’s efforts to promote the right to water: surveys, seminars, etc.

The CNDH welcomed progress made by Morocco to ensure access of all to water and sanitation and strengthen the legal and institutional framework in this regard. It called on the Government and Parliament to:

- adopt the human rights based approach, as it’s universally recognized, including standards and rules providing for access to justice;

- raising awareness about the right to water issues;

adopt a participatory approach and consult with human rights organizations concerned by water and sanitation in the decision-making process;

capacity building for stakeholders concerned with the right to water and sanitation, etc.

Ms Houria Tazi Sadeq is one of the candidates applying for the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation.
