CCDH RECOMMENDS THE INCLUSION OF THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN THE CONCERNS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL DURING THE UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW

The Advisory Council on Human Rights (CCDH) recommended the inclusion of the rights of persons with disabilities in the concerns of the Human Rights Council during the universal periodic review, said Mr. Mohamed Khadiri, CCDH member, during the annual interactive debate on the rights of persons with disabilities, held on the occasion of the 13th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Mr. Khadiri stated that “Morocco sees to include regulations and provisions to guarantee the rights of persons with disabilities in the Moroccan laws, such as the Family Code, the Employment Code, the Medical Insurance Code and the Penal Code which criminalizes henceforth discrimination against persons with disabilities”. He indicated that the Advisory Council followed closely the governmental policies in this field and suggested necessary modifications to guarantee their conformity with international conventions. The Council revised the law relative to persons with disabilities to ensure its compliance with the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, he added.

In accordance with the principles of universality, indivisibility and interdependent of human rights, and in order to guarantee the rights of persons with disabilities with no discrimination, the Advisory Council recommended that all committees concerned should ensure and follow up the application of conventions and instruments relative to the rights of persons with disabilities, take into consideration these rights when they are reviewing reports and give relevant suggestions and recommendations to member states, Mr. Khadiri said.

The Advisory Council on Human rights participates in the 13th session of the UN Human Rights Council, held in Geneva, from March 5 to 26, 2010. This session started on March 1st, 2010. The Advisory Council, represented by an important delegation, will participate in the different meetings of this session.
