CNDH PRESIDENT MEETS WITH US AMBASSADOR TO MOROCCO

President of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Mr. Driss El Yazami, met Mr. Sam Kaplan, US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, on 21 March 2011, at the Headquarters of the Council in Rabat.

Mr. El Yazami briefed the US Ambassador on the Council’s mandate in the field of human rights protection and promotion. H shed light on the role of the Council’s regional mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights at the regional level.

CNDH President explained to Mr. Kaplan how the Council’s members will be appointed. He specified that this matter is one of the urgent priorities of the Council. The reinforcement of the Council’s human resources is another top priority for the time being, he added.

Mr. El Yazami highlighted the achievements of the Kingdom made in the field of human rights. He underlined the importance of the process of reform adopted by Morocco since the inception of the Advisory Council on Human Rights (CNDH now).

This process, Mr. El Yazami said, resulted in the announcement lately of a very important step: revision of the Constitution. In the field of human rights, this process led to the creation of the National Human Rights Council, the Ombudsman and the Ministerial Delegation of Human Rights.

For his part, Mr. Kaplan commended the different reforms adopted by Morocco in the field of human rights and the economic, social…fields.
