CNDH PRESIDENT BRIEFS US DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY ON THE COUNCIL’S MANDATE AND PRIORITIES
President of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Mr. Driss El Yazami, met with Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Ms Kathleen M. Fitzpatrick, on 30 March 2011, at the headquarters of the Council in Rabat.
Mr. El Yazami briefed the US deputy assistant on the mandate of the Council in the field of human rights protection, defense and promotion. He pointed out that the appointment of the Council’s members tops all priorities. There is also a need to reinforce the Council’s human resources, he added. In this regard, he indicated, the Council will make sure women and youth have their merited place in the Council.
Mr. El Yazami highlighted the critical role of the regional commissions and observatories for human rights protection, to be established in the different regions of the Kingdom.
Streets in Moroccan cities are quite familiar with protests and demonstrations, he said. He stressed the crucial importance of responsibility, adding that the peaceful character of any taking to the street must be ensured.
The President of the Council didn’t fail to shed light on the context of reforms, particularly after the royal speech of March 9, that laid down a road map for a better tomorrow for Morocco and Moroccans. Mr. El Yazami recalled the creation of the Ombudsman and the Ministerial Delegation of Human Rights.
For her part, Ms Fitzpatrick praised the announced and adopted reforms. She commended the royal speech and the efforts being made in the field of human rights protection and promotion. She stated that Morocco is advancing in the right direction and should keep moving ahead.
