CNDH Chairman lectures on main human rights related challenges in Morocco
CNDH Chairman Driss El Yazami gave two inaugurating lectures on human rights in Morocco: issues and challenges, at the Faculté polydisciplinaire de Larache (Abdelmalek Essaadi University) and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Social Sciences (Mohammed I University) in Oujda, on the 22nd and 30th of October 2014, respectively.
Morocco launched several human rights reform packages and makes important achievements at the legislative and institutional levels and at the level of public policies. To make these aforts more effective, Morocco needs to address several related challenges, Mr. El Yazami said.
The main challenges ahead, he said, are the effective implementation of the Constitution, strengthening compliance with international human rights law, social change and citizens’ aspirations, gender equality, parity and the fight against discrimination, reform of the judiciary, protection of civil liberties, the protection and promotion of the rights of vulnerable groups and citizens’ participation in representative and participatory democracy mechanisms.
Citizens are increasingly aware of their rights. This fact is translated to daily peaceful protests in the different regions and cities of Morocco asking for the respect of human rights. Civil society groups gained important powers and have an important role under the new Constitution. They are thus required, Mr. El Yazami said, to strengthen their capacities and efforts to organize and supervise citizens to consolidate human rights and improve development in Morocco.
These two university lectures were organized by the CNDH’s regional commissions of Tangier and of Oujda-Figuig, in implementation of the partnership agreements signed by the CNDH and the abovementioned universities.
